Kings XI Punjab crack the first super over of the IPL3 at Chepauk to register their first win of the tournament over Chennai Super Kings

March 22, 2010

IPL3 witnessed its first super over as Kings XI Punjab won the thriller.

CSK won the toss and chose to field. Raina was the stand-in captain in the absence of injured Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Irfan Pathan was promoted to open the batting with Ravi Bopara. They got off to a cautious but confident start against CSK, whom they hadn’t beaten in their previous five encounters. But that didn’t last long as Ravi Bopara holed out to Balaji off Albie Morkel’s bowling in the third over.

Murali deceived his Sri Lankan team mate Sangakkara and had him stumped. The score read 54/2. The Kings XI then lost 2 wickets in the following overs, with Balaji accounting for the in-form Irfan Pathan (39 off 32 balls, 5 fours and a six), who played the ball on to his leg stump, and Muralitharan getting rid of another Sri Lankan colleague in the form of Mahela Jayawardene.

Yuvraj Singh walked in and struck some meaty blows, which were ominous signs for the Super Kings.

The Super kings got a scare in the 14th over when Justin Kemp had to walk off the field with an back problem. A potential setback to their batting line-up.

Yuvraj meanwhile batted superbly and made 43 runs of 28 balls which included 4 boundaries and 2 superb sixes. He was out caught by Bailey at long on off Morkel’s bowling. The next batsman was debutante Juan Theron, whose stay at the crease was limited to a single delivery, and without getting on the score sheets, thanks to a brilliant run out by Suresh Raina, who  effected a direct hit from point.

The Kings XI’s innings ended at 136/8 which was  not quite the score they required to put pressure on the Chennai Super Kings, whose batting line-up has some real big hitting power with the likes of Matthew “Mongoose” Hayden, Raina, Justin Kemp, Albie Morkel etc.

Mutthiah Muralitharan ended up with the best bowling figures of 3-16 from 4 overs for the Super Kings, while Albie Morkel took 2-23 in his 4 overs.

The CSK started off their chase well with openers Matthew Hayden and Parthiv Patel. Out came the famed and controversial Mongoose Bat for Matthew Hayden in the second over for a free hit, the bat with which Hayden mauled the Delhi Daredevils bowlers the other day.

He started here where he left and struck some powerful blows. Parthiv Patel too joined the party with some good hits to the fence.

Ramesh Powar struck right after the Strategic Time out for Punjab and bowled Hayden with a clever piece of bowling. By then the Big Man had scored 33 runs off 24 balls.

Parthiv and Raina then went about their business of winning the match. But the Kings XI added a twist to the tale which seemed to contain a comfortable win for Chennai. They Picked three wickets in the form of Suresh Raina (run out by Theron for 15 runs), Murali Vijay and S Badrinath from the 12th and 13th over, giving them a glimmer of hope.

Parthiv Patel carried on with his innings and made a superb half century. He, however, failed to see the Super Kings through to the end and was dismissed at an individual score of 57 from 58 balls, stumped by Sangakkara off Piyush Chawla.

The match looked set for a close finish. The finish was as close as it could get with the Chennai Super Kings levelling the score at the end of their 20 overs. The match was pushed into the first Super Over of IPL3.

Chennai selected Hayden, Raina and Morkel as their batsmen and Murali as their bowler for the super over.

For Punjab, Juan Theron was the bowler while Pathan, Yuvraj and Jayawardene were the batsmen.

Chennai batted first in the super over since they had batted second on the innings.

Chennai managed 9 runs from their over, with Raina hitting a six in the fourth ball. The over read 1,W,2,6,W.

Punjab needed 10 runs to win. They started off the mini chase with asix by Jatawardene. Murali struck back in the second ball dismissing Mahela. Yuvraj landed the winning blow for Punjab with four in the fourth ball of the over.

Punjab had won the Humdinger.

Juan Theron was the best of the Punjab bowlers with figures of 2-17 and also the wickets in the super over.
