BCCI ask’s IPL to change tender process
March 10, 2010
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) seems to be unhappy with whole bidding process was carried out by IPL Management. The Governing council of IPL orders a major change to the process.
BCCI President Shashank Manoha raised an issue about pre-condition clause of bidders networth to be $1 Billion and above, He suggested that if more corporate or individuals have to bid then this clause had to be eliminated. The governing council members were of the same view as shashank manoha.
A meeting was held by The IPL governing council on Sunday morning. They have decided on modifications to the bidding process. It is said that Lalit Modi, the chairman of IPL was also questioned at the meeting on various clause and its existence. Those clauses are believed to be be the reason of such a minuscule number of bidders to showup.
Mr Modi after meeting announced, “The new document will have some new conditions which the IPL governing council believes will benefit the IPL and Indian cricket in the long term.”
The new tender document will be made available from March 9 and bids are to be submitted by March 21 in Chennai. The new tender will not include clauses on $100 million guarantee a net worth of $1 billion for the bidder.
Mr Modi is not leaving controversy behind him. Bidding process and Dispute with event manager IMG has been major setback to IPL so far. The governing council of IPL had to intervene both the times. Although BCCI has said that Mr Modi will continue till 2012 and report to BCCI president, his future in seems uncertain.

As part of the deal, Karbonn Mobiles will be the IPL’s Official Partner Mobile Phone, Karbonn said in a statement.

Sign of fracture in IPL
March 9, 2010
Fighting between key figures in Indian cricket is leading to a split in the IPL, which starts on Friday.
The Indian Premier League suffered a humiliating setback on Sunday when two extra teams for next year’s competition were put up for auction.
IPL commissioner Lalit Modi promised that an English Premier League soccer club and the MCC would be among the bidders, but they did not turn up at the auction. Only two bids were made and they were rejected and returned unopened.
Bidders had to put up $100-million (R738-million) just to participate in the auction.
The chairman of the Sahara group of companies, which sponsors the Indian team, objected to the bid deposits.
The division in Indian cricket appears to centre on the powerful secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, N Srinivasan, and Modi.
Srinivasan is a top Indian businessman and owner of the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. He will also become the next president of the board of control. He has been supported by the board’s current president, Shashank Manohar.
The auction flop on Sunday has increased suspicion that the IPL has fallen short of the money-spinning bonanza its creator had promised investors, according to The Times of London. It is now clear that IPL teams, bought for a total of more than $225-million, are unlikely to make a profit soon.
None of the teams has published a balance sheet that will stand up to scrutiny. But piecing together the data available publicly - and combining it with what team owners will divulge privately - it seems that all, bar the ailing King’s XI Punjab, broke even last year.
The profits owed much to Modi’s renegotiation of the TV rights that dominate IPL revenue. A deal agreed in March last year doubled the amount the teams receive - to about $15-million a year each. It came in the nick of time. Without it all the teams, bar, possibly, the Royals, would probably have plunged into the red.

IPL 2011 Auction Failure
March 8, 2010
Grand IPL 2011 auction failed miserably.
It was the first setback for Modi, who started the league with promises of quick riches for the teams.
Participation in the auction for the two extra teams to join the IPL next year required a bank-guaranteed cheque of $100-million and net worth of $1-billion from bidders. It was no surprise when only two bidders pitched up.
Last week, Modi claimed that eight to 12 bidders would take part in the auction, including an English Premier League soccer club and the MCC, which owns Lord’s cricket ground.
There was no sign of the football club and the MCC pulled out of the bidding on Saturday.
A base price for the two extra teams, to be based in IPL Ahmedabad and IPL Pune, was set at $225-million.
Modi admitted afterwards that the two bids received were returned without being opened.
The third edition of the IPL is due to start on Friday.

Australian govt assures cricketers of IPL security
February 28, 2010
Chances of Australian cricketers participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) have improved after the government Down Under assured them that terror threats to the Twenty20 event are “not credible”.
According to a report in The Age, the players received “a measure of reassurance” during a briefing from a senior government official at their New Zealand hotel on Saturday.
Australia are currently on a tour of New Zealand and a senior representative from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) flew down to Christchurch to tell them that a recent threat from the al-Qaeda-linked 313 brigade was “not credible”.
“Retired stars contracted with IPL such as Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden, will be given the same information in a telephone hook-up tomorrow,” the report stated.
Australian Cricketers’ Association chief Paul Marsh said he hoped to get specific security assurances from the IPL nonetheless.
“Reg is comfortable that the (al-Qaeda) threat is not credible but we still haven’t received a commitment that the security plans will be implemented as laid out,” Marsh said last night.
IPL to restrict playing squad for the third edition
February 28, 2010
The Indian Premier League, it seems, is getting its act together, at least when it comes to optimum squad size. After receiving feedback from most teams about ‘crowded dressing rooms’, IPL authorities asked all eight franchises to restrict their playing squad to 23 for the third edition, which starts from March 12.
Mumbai Indians’ fielding coach Jonty Rhodes welcomed the move. “The difficult thing from a coaching point of view is having a squad of 30. How do you keep everyone practising and in form? There’s not enough room in the dressing room area,” Rhodes said at the Cricket Club of India.
“Fortunately, since it is being played in India, in case of an emergency, a replacement is a phone call away. Most of the players will tell you that it’s difficult to have 30 players for a meeting.”
Despite being the most expensive IPL team, the Mumbai Indians have failed to make it to the top four in the first two editions. After finishing fifth in the first year, they finished second from bottom last year.
Rhodes highlighted the domestic players’ non-performance as the primary reason for their dismal show . “You need contributions from the local players. Last year, at times, we fell down (on that count). We relied heavily on our international players. Abhishek Nayar played some fantastic knocks towards the end. But not enough of the younger players performed.”
Rhodes, however, observed remarkable improvement in the work ethic during the ongoing camp. He thought there was a “50 percent” improvement in overall fielding standards and singled out Jaydev Shah, Saurabh Tiwary and Ajinkya Rahane for praise.

February 27, 2010
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan on Saturday said he would sing and dance to cheer his Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team during all the seven matches at Eden Gardens in the third edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) next month.
“I will sing, I will dance, I will be there to cheer up the boys,” KKR co-owner King Khan told reporters via video-conference.
SRK, as Shah Rukh is popularly known, had gone to South Africa to encourage his side during the first five matches of the IPL last year.
He said KKR, in association with Nokia, will host Para (neighbourhood) cricket to create a platform for a new generation of cricketers.
Manchester City Consider Buying IPL Cricket Team
February 17, 2010
Manchester City are considering buying an Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket team, according to a report from The Sun.
The club’s owners are believed to feel that their Abu Dhabi base could be a successful place from which to launch their venture into cricket.
The IPL is set to grow from eight franchises to ten in 2011, and league commissioner Lalit Modi confirmed that there has been interest from an English Premier League football club in purchasing one of the new teams.
“I can confirm an English Premier League club has approached us about buying a team,” he said.
That team is definitely not Chelsea, according to the report, leaving City as the only club with the financial clout to invest in a franchise.
