Gambhir powers Delhi Daredevils to a close win over Kings XI Punjab

March 14th, 2010

Daredevils skipper Gautam Gambhir made a gritty 72 of 54 balls as Delhi chased down the target of 142 set by Kings XI.

Kings XI Punjab never really found their feet after they were put in to bat first. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals and barring Ravi Bopara who made 56 of 48 balls, none of their batsmen made significant contributions.

Dirk Nannes was the pick of the Delhi Daredevils bowlers as he returned with phenomenal figures of 2-12 in his four overs.

Delhi Daredevils got an initial scare as Sreesanth struck twice in the second over and got the prized scalps of Sehwag and Dilshan, the latter for a duck leaving the Daredevils at 10/2.

Gambhir and AB De Villiers then went about rebuilding the innings before De Villiers was run out for 7 by Mahela Jayawardene.

Gambhir played the sheet anchor role to perfection and although wickets were falling at the other end, he kept the scoreboard ticking and the Daredevils in the game. He got out in the last over to Irfan Pathan but not before bringing his team 3 runs shy of victory. Manhas who scored 31 off 24 balls hit the winning boundary as the Daredevils won their opening match of IPL 3 by 5 wickets with one ball to spare.
