MUMBAI clinch thriller at home, beat Punjab by 4 wickets
March 31, 2010
Brabourne Stadium, 30th March 2010
Mumbai Indians moved closer to their semi final spot with an all round team performance against the Kings XI Punjab.
Going into the match, Punjab desperately needed a win to stay alive in IPL3. MI, on the other hand, looked for a victory to become the first team to book a semi-final spot.
Ravi Bopara was dismissed early in the innings, Leg Before by Zaheer Khan.
Punjab kept losing wickets at regular intervals.
Bhajji took a magnificent catch to dismiss Irfan Pathan.
Yuvraj Singh looked jaded and a shadow of his own self. His poor run at IPL3 continued and he was dismissed for just 2 runs by Bravo.
Shaun Marsh was the top scorer for Kings XI at 57 from 47 balls. He was brilliantly yorked by Malinga who bowled superby.
The Kings were bowled out for 163 in their 20 overs.
Malinga, who returned figures of 4-22 from his became the joint leading wicket taker of IPL with his Sri Lankan Counterpart and Chennai Super Kings bowler Mutthiah Muralitharan.
Mumbai Indians started off their innings as usual, smooth and quick. Sachin looked at his sublime best as Mumbai got off to a good start. Soon Sachin became the owner of the orange cap (highest scorer of the IPL). He was dismissed by Piyush Chawla, this time without scoring a half century.
Pollard, promoted to no. 3, got off to a jittery start, but soon got to hitting huge, effortless-looking Maximums.
The MI youngsters again stood up to be counted, with Shikhar Dhawan scoring a half century from 40 balls and Saurabh Tiwary making a fighting 31 off 23 balls.
Brett Lee scored the winning runs for Mumbai (literally) by bowling a wide and Mumbai won the match by 4 wickets and 3 balls to spare.
The Mumbai Indians Juggernaut continues to roll !!

Kings XI Punjab crack the first super over of the IPL3 at Chepauk to register their first win of the tournament over Chennai Super Kings
March 22, 2010
IPL3 witnessed its first super over as Kings XI Punjab won the thriller.
CSK won the toss and chose to field. Raina was the stand-in captain in the absence of injured Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Irfan Pathan was promoted to open the batting with Ravi Bopara. They got off to a cautious but confident start against CSK, whom they hadn’t beaten in their previous five encounters. But that didn’t last long as Ravi Bopara holed out to Balaji off Albie Morkel’s bowling in the third over.
Murali deceived his Sri Lankan team mate Sangakkara and had him stumped. The score read 54/2. The Kings XI then lost 2 wickets in the following overs, with Balaji accounting for the in-form Irfan Pathan (39 off 32 balls, 5 fours and a six), who played the ball on to his leg stump, and Muralitharan getting rid of another Sri Lankan colleague in the form of Mahela Jayawardene.
Yuvraj Singh walked in and struck some meaty blows, which were ominous signs for the Super Kings.
The Super kings got a scare in the 14th over when Justin Kemp had to walk off the field with an back problem. A potential setback to their batting line-up.
Yuvraj meanwhile batted superbly and made 43 runs of 28 balls which included 4 boundaries and 2 superb sixes. He was out caught by Bailey at long on off Morkel’s bowling. The next batsman was debutante Juan Theron, whose stay at the crease was limited to a single delivery, and without getting on the score sheets, thanks to a brilliant run out by Suresh Raina, who effected a direct hit from point.
The Kings XI’s innings ended at 136/8 which was not quite the score they required to put pressure on the Chennai Super Kings, whose batting line-up has some real big hitting power with the likes of Matthew “Mongoose” Hayden, Raina, Justin Kemp, Albie Morkel etc.
Mutthiah Muralitharan ended up with the best bowling figures of 3-16 from 4 overs for the Super Kings, while Albie Morkel took 2-23 in his 4 overs.
The CSK started off their chase well with openers Matthew Hayden and Parthiv Patel. Out came the famed and controversial Mongoose Bat for Matthew Hayden in the second over for a free hit, the bat with which Hayden mauled the Delhi Daredevils bowlers the other day.
He started here where he left and struck some powerful blows. Parthiv Patel too joined the party with some good hits to the fence.
Ramesh Powar struck right after the Strategic Time out for Punjab and bowled Hayden with a clever piece of bowling. By then the Big Man had scored 33 runs off 24 balls.
Parthiv and Raina then went about their business of winning the match. But the Kings XI added a twist to the tale which seemed to contain a comfortable win for Chennai. They Picked three wickets in the form of Suresh Raina (run out by Theron for 15 runs), Murali Vijay and S Badrinath from the 12th and 13th over, giving them a glimmer of hope.
Parthiv Patel carried on with his innings and made a superb half century. He, however, failed to see the Super Kings through to the end and was dismissed at an individual score of 57 from 58 balls, stumped by Sangakkara off Piyush Chawla.
The match looked set for a close finish. The finish was as close as it could get with the Chennai Super Kings levelling the score at the end of their 20 overs. The match was pushed into the first Super Over of IPL3.
Chennai selected Hayden, Raina and Morkel as their batsmen and Murali as their bowler for the super over.
For Punjab, Juan Theron was the bowler while Pathan, Yuvraj and Jayawardene were the batsmen.
Chennai batted first in the super over since they had batted second on the innings.
Chennai managed 9 runs from their over, with Raina hitting a six in the fourth ball. The over read 1,W,2,6,W.
Punjab needed 10 runs to win. They started off the mini chase with asix by Jatawardene. Murali struck back in the second ball dismissing Mahela. Yuvraj landed the winning blow for Punjab with four in the fourth ball of the over.
Punjab had won the Humdinger.
Juan Theron was the best of the Punjab bowlers with figures of 2-17 and also the wickets in the super over.

Dirk Nannes again ended with the best figures for the Daredevils and was the only bowler to have a single digit economy rate.
Dilshan started Delhi Daredevil’s innings with a boundary off Zaheer Khan’s first ball. He along with Virender Sehwag got the Daredevils off to a flyer before being bowled by Sri Lankan team-mate Lasith Malinga off a slower ball.
Dwayne Bravo then struck twice in the sixth over to pick up the crucial wickets of Virender Sehwag (26 from 16 balls) and AB De Villiers.
MI keeper Aditya Tare then stumped his Daredevils counterpart Dinesh Karthik for 16 off 6 balls off fit-again Harbhajan Singh’s bowling. Sehwag was dismissed by Munaf Patel, with Smith taking a magnificent catch running backwards. But by then Delhi were looking poised to win the match comfortably requiring 43 runs of 60 balls. AB De Villiers was soon dismissed by Shane Warne, which turned out to be the last wicket lost by the Daredevils. They were driven home comfortably by Dinesh Karthik and Mithun Manhas by 6 wickets and 17 balls to spare.
It was getting really difficult at times for the players to play among all the insects that swarmed the stadium. The umpires too were having a tough time on the field. But everyone showed great professionalism and the game wasn’t interrupted.
Sehwag was awarded the Man of the Match for his blistering knock.
And so at the moment it is Two in Two games for both, the Delhi Daredevils and Rajasthan Royals, wins for the former and losses for the latter.

Gambhir powers Delhi Daredevils to a close win over Kings XI Punjab
March 14, 2010
Daredevils skipper Gautam Gambhir made a gritty 72 of 54 balls as Delhi chased down the target of 142 set by Kings XI.
Kings XI Punjab never really found their feet after they were put in to bat first. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals and barring Ravi Bopara who made 56 of 48 balls, none of their batsmen made significant contributions.
Dirk Nannes was the pick of the Delhi Daredevils bowlers as he returned with phenomenal figures of 2-12 in his four overs.
Delhi Daredevils got an initial scare as Sreesanth struck twice in the second over and got the prized scalps of Sehwag and Dilshan, the latter for a duck leaving the Daredevils at 10/2.
Gambhir and AB De Villiers then went about rebuilding the innings before De Villiers was run out for 7 by Mahela Jayawardene.
Gambhir played the sheet anchor role to perfection and although wickets were falling at the other end, he kept the scoreboard ticking and the Daredevils in the game. He got out in the last over to Irfan Pathan but not before bringing his team 3 runs shy of victory. Manhas who scored 31 off 24 balls hit the winning boundary as the Daredevils won their opening match of IPL 3 by 5 wickets with one ball to spare.

Bizarre Shot selection costs Deccan Chargers dear as KKR start off on a winning note
March 13, 2010
The DLF Indian Premier League Season 3 Kicked off at the DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai with a rousing opening ceremony, which had some thrilling singing, dancing and acrobatic performances.
The toss was won by Adam Gilchrist who chose to field first.
Umpire Rudi Koertzen went “Scorers are u ready? Umpire Tiffin are u ready? Fielding captain are u ready? Batsmen are you ready? Welcome all Indians to IPL3″ on the loudspeaker and the cricket started!!! Another innovation, making people feel more involved with the game, to what has been one revolutionary event for world cricket since its inception in 2008
Chaminda Vaas breathed Fire in the First over of IPL3 and got Manoj Tiwary and Dada for ducks. Pujara couldn’t capitalize on a good start and got out giving catching practice to mid on. Herschelle Gibbs took a stunning reflex catch at point to dismiss Brad Hodge
Owais Shah (58* off 46 balls) and Angelo Mathews (65* off 46 balls) stabilized the innings. They then upped the ante after the 15th over and milked the last 4 overs for around 60 runs to take the score to a fighting 161/4. The match now looked a bit evenly poised.
Gilchrist and Laxman, after a couple of scares at the beginning, got the Deccan Chargers off to a flyer in the second innings.
Murli Karthik got the first breakthrough for the Knight Riders in the form of Laxman. Gilchrist was the next to go, but not before the Australian Great had scored 54 off 35 balls. At that stage it looked like the chargers were firmly in the driver’s seat. But Gilly’s wicket opened the floodgates for the Knight Riders as they picked two wickets, those of Gibbs and Symonds who both went for rash shots, in quick succession and it was suddenly Game on for the Knight Riders. Rohit Sharma fell fighting for just 13 runs and left the chargers reeling at 128 for 5, needing 34 off 22 balls to win.
It was all Knight Riders from then on as the Chargers lost quick wickets, thanks to some bizarre shots by the Deccan Batters, and were strangulated for runs.
Ganguly was elated and jumping for joy at the end as the Riders went on the win the match by 11 runs, a start they badly needed after a disastrous last edition where everything went against them.
Angelo Mathews got the DLF Maximum sixes award, Gibbs got the Karbon Kamaal Catch of the day for his brilliant effort. Saurav Ganguly was awarded the star of the day award.
A great Comeback win for the Knight riders, who got a fighting total thanks to brilliant efforts by Owais Shah and Angelo Mathews, and followed up by some brilliant fielding.

Manish Pandey of Bangalore Royal Challengers – First Indian Batsman to Record Century in IPL
May 21, 2009
Manish Pandey started with opening batsman Jacques Kallis after Bangalore won the toss and elected to Bat. Pandey Batted to 114 off just 73 balls and finished unbeaten.
Manish Pandey smashed away to Boundary 10 times and got 4 DLF maximum sixes in his pocket. Strike Rate of 156.16
The Score of 114 is highest so far in IPL 2009; AB de Villiers of Delhi Daredevils is 2nd with 105 in this season.
It is also interesting to note Manish Pandey is the only Indian Batsman in IPL so far to score a Century. AB de Villiers of Delhi Daredevils and Manish Pandey are only two Century Scorers in IPL 2009 season. IPL 2008 had Adam Gilchrist (Hyderabad), Andrew Symonds (Hyderabad) and Brendon McCullum (Kolkata) scoring a Century.

IPL 2008 with Mumbai Indian’s wasn’t that good in terms of Performance for Manish Pandey, hence Mumbai Indian decided not to renew contract with him.
Bangalore Royal Challengers signed on Manish for $105,000, looks like just one match has recovered all investment IPL Bangalore made on Manish.
Bravo !! Manish Keep it up, way to go bro …

Korbo ! Lorbo! Magar Harbo Re….
May 5, 2009
Korbo ! Lorbo! Magar Harbo Re….seems more like the catch-word for the Knights (IPL Kolkata) this season as they lose yet another match; six on the trot to be precise! The only constant factor for them! So much so that there are numerous jokes on why it is safer to bet on a KKR match than on stocks! But what makes [losing] it worse this time is that it has taken away with it any chance that the Knight Riders harboured of making it to the next level!
This team had the best at their disposal; King Khan made sure …what with special camps at Australia, intense fitness regimes, multiple coaches. Alas! All in vein as victory remained elusive.
As a KKR exit seems almost imminent our heart goes out to King Khan…here’s hoping that the next edition brings him better luck!
All the KING’s men couldn’t help KKR win a match!
May 4, 2009
For a team that has more support staff than players; (Head coach ,Assistant- coach, Fielding coach ,Bowling coach, Throwing coach, Wicket keeping coach) and theories abound - multiple captaincy, YO-YO fitness tests and special camps,it is strange that the only form of victory that it has tasted is with a little bit of help from outside- the weather and the Duckworth- Lewis method!
The Knights seem to have got things horribly wrong this season II of the Indian Premiere League. First the controversy over multiple captaincy theory then the sacking of Saurav Gangully (as captain) at the very last moment to the mystery blogger; they have managed to be in the news for all the wrong reasons… And at the end of five games find themselves languishing at the bottom of the table with one win and one draw.
There are many questions that need to be answered for it is quite strange that the management send home two senior players after having played them for only two games!(Aakash chopra -2 and Sanjay Bangar-1) with a comment that cant get stranger than this…

” These are two[Aakash Chopra and Sanjay Bangar] very good senior international players so John and the team management thought that if they are not going to have the opportunity [to play]it is unfair to keep them around”. The fact is that both these players are ill-equipped for T20 cricket and shouldn’t have been in the team in the first place.
Secondly they keep a seasoned spin bowler like Murali Kartik on the bench till it’s too late when we have already seen what the Kumbles, the Warnes and the likes of Bhajjis can do to the opposition. Then ofcourse they buy a player for 600 grands(MashrafeMortaza) and not use him!
It is high time that the KKR management especially its Chief of Cricketing Operations claimed responsibility for the team and did what is right for the Knight Riders. For the season seems to be lost but they must get back to winning ways and if there is one person who can meet this challenge it is Saurav Gangully! You may hate to admit it, Mr. Buchanan but reinstating the captaincy to Gangully is your only option at the moment!
